In line with most schools, we work from and develop the National Curriculum to meet our pupils’ needs. In doing this we place a high emphasis on English and Mathematics but through carefully planned cross curricular themes and topics, all subjects contribute to the delivery of an interesting and exciting creative curriculum at Stonebow. We aim to produce well-rounded children who can play a positive part as tomorrow's citizens. We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for others, such as those with different faiths and beliefs.
We also work tirelessly to create an enriched curriculum for our children, injecting varied and rich learning experiences. Throughout the year we endeavour to organise trips and visits or we may invite a visitor into school. All pupils from Yr 3 to Yr 6 also have the opportunity to go on a residential visit and participate in a whole range of activities in locations such as Whitby, Ironbridge, York and Plas Caerdeon.
Learning outside the classroom is important for us at Stonebow and in delivering this aspect of the curriculum we are fortunate to have a large amount of outdoor space which includes a sports field, outdoor classroom and an extensive playground.
The curriculum comprises all planned activities within school which may be extended through homework. At Stonebow, we follow the Early Learning Goals for the Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum programmes of study throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Phonics at Stonebow
In Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons children learn to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.
Throughout the programme, children learn the English alphabetic code: the 150+ graphemes that represent 44 speech sounds. They rapidly learn sounds and the letter, or group of letters, they need to represent them, in three sets of Speed Sounds Lessons. Simple and enjoyable mnemonics help all children to grasp the letter-sound correspondences quickly, especially those who are at risk of making slower progress or those who are new to learning English. This knowledge is taught as ‘tricky’ words (we call them Red Words) and are practised frequently.
Phonic books are closely matched to children’s increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words so that, early on, they experience plenty of success. Repeated readings of the texts support their increasingly fluent decoding. A thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion to help teachers ensure that children comprehend what they are reading. Teachers read aloud and discuss picture books with similar themes to those in the storybooks, so children build up background knowledge ready for the next storybook.
The Foundation Stage
Four guiding principles shape practice in early years settings. These are:
• every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured;
• children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships;
• children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers; and
• children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision including children with special educational needs and disabilities.
There are seven areas of learning and development. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These three areas, the prime areas, are:
- communication and language;
- physical development; and
- personal, social and emotional development.
The specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied are:
- understanding the world; and
- expressive arts and design.

Our curriculum is organised on the basis of the following subjects:

As well as the core and foundation subjects listed above, we also aim to equip children with a good understanding of the outside world and the ability to make informed and sensible choices.
