Introduction

At Stonebow Primary School we provide our children with a broad and balance curriculum where key transferable knowledge and vocabulary is developed to ensure children can develop the skills to access and enjoy the variety of enrichment opportunities we present. This policy outlines the aims and principles that underpin the curriculum in our school.

OUR INTENT

At Stonebow Primary School we believe that every child has an innate capacity for the acquisition of knowledge which should be nurtured and stimulated through the provision of an exciting, creative and challenging curriculum rich in vocabulary.  Our curriculum is designed to support children in the application of embedded knowledge rather than encouraging them to simply assimilate transient facts. To emphasise this, all new topics each term begin with key questions clearly displayed in classrooms and an enrichment opportunity ‘hook’ (e.g. Historical visit to or by experts early in the term) The questions we ask ourselves as educators are based on the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) philosophy from 2018:

• If something does not directly contribute to the quality of teaching and learning interactions, is it needed?
• Do you have evidence that the activity you are undertaking impacts on pupil progress?
• Could there be equally effective approaches that take less time?

Our curriculum is planned to ensure that a Stonebow child can:

• Have high self esteem – respecting themselves, others, the community and the environment
• Be able to work independently and collaboratively
• Achieve high standards in all areas of the curriculum
• Extend their wider vocabulary and understanding
• Gain advanced technological skills
• Seek to extend themselves in mind, body and spirit

We also believe that outdoor learning should not be exclusive to the EYFS but should be an integral part of all children’s learning.
