INTENT

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, so increasing their self-confidence and sense of achievement.

AIMS

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

• Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historic periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
• Learn to sing, and to use their voices to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
• Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

IMPLEMENTATION – How we do it at Stonebow

Children in years 1-6 are taught Music by a music specialist as part of PPA provision. This curriculum covers Singing, Listening, Composition and Musicianship (KS1)/ Performance (KS2). The taught materials are followed up by class teachers in short rhythm/ singing sessions. All children in Y3 are also taught the basics of playing the ukulele on a weekly basis with a ukulele specialist.

All children at Stonebow have a weekly music assembly led by a music specialist. This includes opportunities to listen to pieces of music of different genres and periods, vocal warm-ups and age-appropriate singing material. Songs cover a range of cultures, genres and purposes, including religious celebrations.

Instrumental lessons (individual or small group) are available to Key Stage 2 children in piano, guitar, flute, violin and viola and we also offer singing clubs to KS1 and KS2 children. These all bring further opportunities for performing at our annual Summer Soiree and other events in the community.

IMPACT – Assessment of outcomes

• Judgements against the National Curriculum Key Performance Indicators for WT, ES and GDS are made primarily by teacher observation to inform termly assessment.
