3M Young Innovators Challenge 2018
On Wednesday 2nd May 2018, fourteen KS2 children took part in the 3M Young Innovators Challenge judging afternoon at the 3M Charwood Campus site.
The challenge was the Slo-Mo Marble Challenge. This involved designing and building a slo-mo marble run from a given list of materials and to specific dimensions, which maximised the time taken for a marble to run down it. The children, in teams of 4 or 5, worked on this during a lunchtime club over the previous few months.
The teams presented their findings to the judges at 3M. This included evidence of learning about gravity and friction, as well as how their marble run was designed and constructed, before the marble run was then actually tested out and timed, with the children having to answer questions from the judges.
Although the teams did not make it through to the finals, the judges gave lots of positive feedback and were particularly impressed by the children’s knowledge and application of the science behind their designs. All of the teams scored very highly on this aspect as well as the style and design of the runs.
The children have all worked incredibly hard for this challenge and have used all of their Stonebow Powers to design and develop their amazing marble runs. It has been a pleasure to see how their confidence has grown, as well as building their team working skills and learning lots about science and engineering whilst having lots of fun!
