Design & Technology

We really enjoy our Design and Technology (DT) lessons at Stonebow!  We follow planning from the Design and Technology Association (Projects on a Page) to ensure coverage of the curriculum.  When undertaking a design task, we encourage the children to think about a product’s user and purpose.  We want our children to respond creatively to design tasks while also developing the necessary skills and technical experience so that they can make informed design decisions.  We revisit and improve on skills as pupils move up through the school.

Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject that encourages the children to use creativity and imagination to solve real life problems.  Pupils learn through trial and error, they take risks and develop a variety of skills.  Product design is all around us and our DT sessions encourage our children to reflect upon its impact on daily life and the wider world.  During DT lessons, our children draw on their prior learning from other areas of the curriculum including mathematics, science, computing and art.

Aims

The national curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge and understanding and skills in order to design and make high quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and product and the work of others
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
