Our Spacecraft

Lower Key Stage Two classes were set the task of designing and building a spacecraft…  (video below)

Task one:

Design a spacecraft which will take you ‘Out of This World’.  Before you begin, look in books or on the web for inspiration. However, you are travelling to planets as yet undiscovered so space crafts designed in the twenty first century won’t have all the features needed for such epic journeys. Remember, we are always most impressed by original ideas (reach for a dictionary!)

Think about which recyclable materials you have available, or can start collecting to make your spacecraft.

Draw your spacecraft design, labeling it with the materials you will be using. Think about the special features it has, how you will attach components (hopefully not with lots of sellotape!), the order in which you will need to do tasks etc.

Later this term we will be developing our speaking and listening skills by taking guided tours of the interior each space craft. The class will be asked to close their eyes and imagine the scene with your child acting as guide. It would be helpful therefore if your discussions during the design and building phases could include how the craft functions - sleeping quarters, viewing platform etc. Don’t worry you don’t need to make these – just imagine them!

Task Two:

Using the recyclable materials you have collected, make your spacecraft. We will display your spacecraft next to your design. Don’t worry if you need to make changes to your design; in real life many modifications are made to the prototype before a product is finally manufactured.  Whilst you’re cutting/sticking/painting you could discuss where your spacecraft could take you and what life might be like on distant planets (i.e. it’s good to talk)
