Brass lessons at Stonebow
Our brass players

In partnership with Charnwood College and the Leicestershire Music Cultural Trust, we are thrilled to offer heavily subsidised brass lessons, in small groups, with new and free instruments loaned to each participating student.
Learning to play a brass instrument is not only a fun and rewarding experience but also offers numerous benefits for your child’s development. From improved concentration and coordination to fostering creativity and self-expression, music education has a profound impact on academic and personal growth.
Hannah Matthews is a graduate from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and currently teaches at Charnwood College. She will be delivering engaging and high-quality Brass lessons tailored to each student. Whether your child is a beginner or has some experience with brass instruments, we welcome all students to join us on this musical journey.
Local Brass Concerts
Working with Robert Bakewell and Charnwood College we participate in local concerts to show case our children’s musical talents.

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, so increasing their self-confidence and sense of achievement.
AIMS – INTENT
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historic periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- Learn to sing, and to use their voices to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
IMPLEMENTATION – How we do it at Stonebow
All children taught by their class teacher. We use the Kapow Scheme of work matched to the DfE model curriculum. An overview of Kapow Music can be found here:
It covers Singing, Listening, Composition and Musicianship (KS1)/ Performance (KS2). The taught materials are followed up by class teachers in short rhythm/ singing sessions.
All children at Stonebow have a weekly music assembly led by a staff member who has musical experience. This includes opportunities to listen to pieces of music of different genres and periods, vocal warm-ups and age-appropriate singing material. Songs cover a range of cultures, genres and purposes, including religious celebrations.
IMPACT – Assessment of outcomes
- Judgements against the National Curriculum Key Performance Indicators for WT, ES and GDS are made primarily by teacher observation to inform termly assessment.
Music at Stonebow Primary School is taught by combining the study of five different elements of music: Pulse, Voice, Rhythm, Pitch and 20th Century Music. Through the early ages (EYFS/KS1) and onto the older ages (KS2) of the primary curriculum.
